Kathy Fountaine lives in New York City. She discovered oil painting through an art class and then the pandemic began. Although she is no longer attending a regular art class, she continues oil painting allowing her to grow through her art. This blog is a reflection of what she is learning about art…and life.

Try Something New

I tried something new. A grand-nephew joined the local football team – his first time playing organized football. So, I wanted to give him something special to commemorate his love of football. I guessed at the color of uniform and used my high school colors.

It’s not my best work. I guess it depends on who looks at it. I have trouble painting faces. It’s a different type of skill when painting portraits or faces. How detailed will the face be, getting the cheekbones and nose lines right….

The uniform is not the right color, but it doesn’t matter. It is hanging in his bedroom, because I painted it for him. It’s gratifying to know it is special for him – hopefully a keepsake for a lifetime.

When we do something for someone special, making it “perfect” isn’t the point. It’s the time and effort into thinking of that individual; making it something personal – the thought behind it.

When we give someone special something of ourselves, it doesn’t have to be perfect, does it? It’s the giving of ourselves to the other. That should be the point.
